Top 10 Bike Pedals for Commuter in 2014

Just as bikes come in a wide variety of designs, so do bike pedals. The type of pedal that you choose will depend on what sort of cycling you are doing – mountain biking, BMX, or road cycling for instance – and also your experience as a cyclist. If you are a beginner, you may want something with a fair degree of float. However, many riders feel more comfortable with less float, or even no float at all.

Here, we look at ten of the top pedals on the market, ranging from high end to entry level. Where practical, we have included a link to a useful YouTube video.
Shimano Ultegra PD-6700 SL Pedal

This is a popular pedal for road cycling. The body is made of aluminium, while the pedal has a steel spindle, and the cleat retention bar is composite. The spring tension is adjustable, and the pedal top has a steel plate so that cleat wear will not damage the body. The stack height is 13.7 mm, and the float is 3 degrees either way. Comes with a two year warranty.

Shimano PD-M324 SPD Dual Platform Pedal

This is an aluminium bodied dual platform pedal that is designed for multi-purpose use. On one side of the pedal, there is a clip interface, while on the other it is simply a standard platform for use with ordinary shoes. This means that you can use the platform side for city riding, and then clip in out in the countryside, giving you more power for climbing up hills.

Another dual platform pedal from Shimano. The standard side lets you hop on for a quick ride, or for city commuting, while the other side lets you clip in for longer rides. It has a chromoly spindle, while the body is steel. It is the lightest dual platform pedal Shimano makes. The float is adjustable.
